Short answer

Across Westchester County the most common restoration call is a finished basement that took water in heavy rain, often with a flooded furnace or water heater. Village downtowns bring flooded shops and restaurants, and older houses bring burst pipes and ceiling leaks in winter. Photograph the damage before moving anything, keep clear of wet outlets, and call.

What Ida left behind across Westchester

Ida showed how quickly water gets into basements and shops across the county, from the Sound Shore to the northern villages. The same storm also showed the second problem that follows every flood here: mold in basements that were not dried properly afterward.

What that means on a job: most Westchester basements are finished, which means drywall, carpet and furniture sitting at the lowest point of the house. After a flood we cut drywall above the water line, pull carpet and pad, and dry the framing and slab, and we take moisture readings before anything is closed up again so the mold the County warned about does not follow.

After Ida the Westchester County Executive toured flooding in Yonkers, Mamaroneck, Rye, downtown Chappaqua, Mount Kisco and Port Chester, reported 200 cars lost in the Village of Mamaroneck and flooded businesses in Port Chester, and warned of health hazards from water and mold.

Sound Shore communities from Rye to New Rochelle to Mamaroneck were particularly hard hit by Ida, leaving many homeowners and renters with flooded basements.

Buildings and blocks

Sound Shore towns, central Westchester and the river villages

On the Sound Shore, in Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, New Rochelle and Port Chester, low ground by the water and brooks that rise fast in heavy rain mean flooded basements, garages and ground-floor shops. Those jobs start with pump-out and flood cuts, then drying.

Central Westchester, around White Plains, Scarsdale and Eastchester, is mostly larger houses with finished basements, plus offices and apartment buildings in the downtowns. Sump pump failures, water heater leaks and burst pipes on outside walls are typical, and so is the mold that follows a basement that stayed damp.

In the river towns and the northern villages such as Chappaqua and Mount Kisco, older houses on hills bring roof and window leaks, plaster ceilings, and village business districts that flood when streams overtop.
