Nassau CountyShort answer
In Nassau County the restoration calls split by shore. On the South Shore it is coastal and canal flooding, salt water in crawl spaces and basements, and storm damage. Across the rest of the county it is basements that flood in heavy rain, burst pipes, appliance leaks and house fires. Photograph the damage, keep clear of wet electrics, and call.

What Sandy did to Nassau’s South Shore
The South Shore of Nassau took some of the worst of Sandy, and the rebuild took years. Many houses were raised or rebuilt since, but the same low ground floods in every big storm, which is why salt water, wet crawl spaces and flood claims are such a large part of the work here.
What that means on a job: on the South Shore we assume salt water until readings say otherwise, and salt keeps walls damp long after they look dry, so more drywall and insulation come out. We also record wind damage and flood damage separately from the start, since homeowners and flood policies treat them as different losses and adjusters ask for both.
The Island Park mayor said 99 percent of the village was underwater during Sandy.

South Shore canals, mid-county capes and North Shore houses
On the South Shore, in Island Park, Long Beach, Oceanside, Baldwin and Freeport, many houses back onto canals and bays. Tidal and storm flooding, salt water in crawl spaces and basements, and wind damage are the main jobs, and we remove more drywall and insulation after salt water than after a fresh water leak.
Through the middle of the county, in Hempstead, Levittown, Hicksville and the towns around them, capes and split-levels with basements are typical. Heavy rain, failed sump pumps, water heaters and washing machines account for most basement losses, and kitchen fires for many of the fire calls.
On the North Shore, older and larger houses bring roof and window leaks, plaster ceilings, radiators and oil heat, and with oil heat comes the occasional puff-back that coats a whole house in soot.
